Michael Conlon,
Tower Road, Piltown
1947 - 2006
It is with deep sadness that we record the sudden and unexpected passing of Michael Conlon, Teagasc’s director of horticulture and former principal of Kildalton Agricultural College. He was 59 years of age.
Michael was a native of County Roscommon. During his time at Kildalton College, he specialised in potatoes as well as fruit and other vegetables. As director of horticulture, Michael undertook a comprehensive development of the department, before becoming college principal.
He played a major role in the development and construction of Piltown Community Hall, which was officially opened in 1988 by then TD Gene Fitzgerald.
Given his professional connection with agriculture, it was only natural that Michael became involved with the Iverk Show.
Michael had been only too happy to serve as a judge of vegetable produce at the Show. He was also in charge of the judges in the produce section.
In the past year, Michael had assumed the duties of Show Secretary, in which he had quickly made his mark. It is indeed a tragedy that he did not live to see just one show as Secretary in September.
He will be deeply missed for his efficiency and, more importantly, his friendliness. A great lover of sport, Michael had also been involved in Piltown GAA Club.
A large crowd of mourners attended his funeral on Monday last, where a guard of honour was formed by representatives of both the Iverk Show and Teagasc.
Michael Conlon was predeceased by his wife Diane and is survived by his children Paul and Sarah. May he rest in peace. |
